 Forest Schools

Portavogie Primary School are aiming to achieve Forest School status over the coming year.  Pupils at our school will take part in lessons in our Forest School and so far are thoroughly enjoy learning outdoors.

Please view below to see Forest School's activities which we have been involved in so far.

What is Forest School?

"Forest School" is based on a Scandinavian idea that considers children's contact with nature to be extremely important from an early age. (taken from the website https://www.forestschoolsni.com ) Visit this website for more information. There is also a section for Family activities and Nature Ranger Programmes.

Why are they so important?

  • Learning without walls provides children an alternative environment for high quality teaching and learning
  • Children’s mental well-being and health benefit from being outdoors – staff too!
  • Connecting with nature whilst developing lifelong skills
  • Developing Thinking skills and personal capabilities in ways it would be difficult to do indoors.

P3 - Making Nests 🐣

P3 enjoyed learning about bird nests.  We investigated what they are made from and what is inside them.  We split into groups and each group was given an egg.  The groups were challenged to create a nest for their egg.  We worked together in our groups to find twigs, grass and leaves to build our nests.  We were lucky enough to discover a REAL nest as well! Have a look below at the fun we had in our session.

P2 - Making Minibeasts 🐞

We started by playing a minibeast game. We were given some clues about minibeasts, and we had to run to the picture we thought was the answer.  We then were given a ball of clay and had to decide which minibeast we were going to create.  Once we had moulded the clay, we then used natural materials to decorate our bugs!  Have a look below at the fun that we had!
